Cost of Innovation! Sand vs. Diamond

Men know what it costs their wallet when a woman asks for an accessories, gold or diamond. Similarly Every computer expert knows that what made this giant evolution in the computer industry was the microprocessor which is made of simple silicon (found in sand) yet human mind managed to make it possibly worth the cost of diamond if we compare the value generated from same weight of both materials.

When Innovation Projects are mentioned thinking of executives or financial people jumps huge financial investments or costs. I tell them that cost of Innovation vs. value is same as cost of sand to Microprocessors.

I wish not to analyze why this wrong perception is in mind of most business people yet I wonder why people don’t calculate and compare cost of any simple or complex innovation initiatives. It is fear of the unknown.

Sand is the cheapest element we know, the process of bringing ideas from humans mind is similarly the cheapest production we can imagine and I call it the cheapest factory we can ever imagine. What require investing in is the next step where we put the minds in the proper atmosphere to generate the largest amount and the best radical never thought of and brilliant ideas. Next investment must be in capturing ideas while maximizing captures and minimizing leakages. Then captured ideas need to be handled using proper methods and by the right people. The rest is clear I guess.

My invitation to everybody to look at money from different perspective the way of converting sand to money through making microprocessors. Innovation in your field can most likely to achieve a lot of value without the need of any high-tech experience like microprocessors.
